Sofia Blokhin, a 12th-grade student at EBS High School, has achieved the extraordinary feat of becoming the European Junior Rapid Chess Champion

Sofia Blokhin, a member of Team Estonia, secured first place in the G-18 class at the European Youth Rapid Chess Championships in Brežice, Slovenia. Ranked third in the 18-year-old girls' category, Blokhin clinched the first six games consecutively, ensuring a firm lead even before the final round. At the end of seven rounds, she came in first with six points out of 12 players.

Apart from her gold in rapid chess, Sofia Blokhin also clinched a silver medal in the blitz chess. Moreover, in team with Marina Levtšenko, Sofia bagged a bronze in the G-18 women's team rapid chess competition.

Participating in the European Youth Chess Championships in Slovenia was intense for Sofia. Over three days, she competed in a whopping 32 chess matches from dawn till dusk, each game preceded by a dedicated preparation session. 

 

Joakim Helenius, President of the Chess Federation, also congratulated the new European Champion and said that he was looking forward her returning to Estonia to congratulate the young athlete in person. "This kind of success is an example for all young chess players and of course a great joy for the whole of Estonia and above all for the chess community," said Helenius.
