On January 30th, the EBS community gathered in the cozy auditorium of EBS to commemorate Madis Habakuk's 85th birthday anniversary. The memorial evening was attended by current and former colleagues, alumni, students, friends, and family members. In a warm and heartfelt atmosphere, they reminisced about Madis Habakuk's rich life's work, shared stories from the early days of EBS, and discussed his thoughts on leadership and life philosophy.

During the first panel conversation moderated by Margit Kilumets, economists Erik Terk and Jaak Leimann spoke about Madis as a colleague and friend. They discussed the era when Estonian economics was still forming and highlighted Madis's contributions to the development of management science and philosophy in Estonia.

The early days and birth stories of EBS were also remembered. Reet Talvik, Karmen Harju, and Tõnu Küttmaa, who joined EBS in its first years and worked there for many years, shared their warm memories of Madis as a leader and colleague.

Arno Almann introduced the newly published collection of articles, interviews, and pearls of wisdom titled “Timeless in Its Time. Madis Habakuk 85”, which encapsulates the creative legacy of Madis Habakuk. The collection includes thoughts such as "A leader cannot be lukewarm", "Higher goals are better", and "Every decision changes something for the worse," - offering readers a chance to delve into and reflect on Madis's life wisdom.

On stage, Madis's son, the Chancellor of EBS, Mart Habakuk, along with his daughters, Ave and Helen Habakuk, reminisced about him as a person and family head. They emphasized Madis's teachings and example in self-development, his curiosity about the world. Marje Habakuk, Madis's widow, expressed sincere delight that even the grandchildren are involved with the school, carrying forward the legacy of the school.

Professor Tiit Elenurm and family friends Reet and Tiit Made shared their fond memories of Madis as a down-to-earth, even-tempered, sports-loving, joyful companion, and a challenging discussion partner.

Warm conversations continued after the official part in a more informal setting, reviving memories and bridging to the present day.

The centerpiece of the memorial evening was a thought formulated and made a creed of EBS by Madis Habakuk: "We have not come to the world to make footprints, but something that creates value for the following generations and lasts." There is no doubt that Madis Habakuk was an extraordinary person whose impact on EBS and the wider Estonian society lasts and continues to inspire also future generations.

Thank you all for coming and making this evening warm and memorable!
