EBS High School Principal Kersti Uudla: “Have you ever thought that each new year is like a blank canvas – an opportunity to visualise your dreams and achievements?
We have 12 completely new and diverse months ahead of us, offering opportunities to improve ourselves. Use this time wisely and thoughtfully. Ask yourself important questions that will help you define your personal goals. Think about it: what truly matters to you? What is one major achievement you will accomplish this year? How can you develop your strengths further? These questions invite you to take responsibility and make conscious choices that will propel your personal and academic growth.”
Taking Responsibility and Self-Leadership
In her speech, the principal emphasised the importance of taking responsibility for one’s actions. She shared everyday examples where responsibility, or the lack of it, directly affects outcomes. “What if a teacher forgot their lesson materials at home for the second week in a row or left after the third period to go to a hairdresser’s appointment? This doesn’t happen because teachers are self-driven and responsible. The same is expected of you. See your role not just in school life but also in your future careers. Responsibility is a skill that opens doors to success in every area of life,” she said.
The Importance of Communication Skills and Precision
According to the principal, knowledge alone is not enough – it is also crucial to be able to convey your ideas clearly and precisely. “Communication skills are not only about what you say but also how you say it,” she pointed out, and underlined that effective and respectful communication is a sign of maturity and a vital collaboration skill.
The Art of Managing Emotions
Kersti Uudla: “When dealing with challenging situations, don’t let negative emotions overwhelm you.” Instead, she suggested adopting a different approach: “Don’t get angry; be surprised! If something doesn’t go as planned, approach it with curiosity and humour.” She also shared a humorous example from her son’s high school days when he decided to replace spontaneous swearing with the phrase “Oh my goodness!” “Whenever his shoelace broke or his sandwich fell on the floor, his immediate reaction was always: Oh my goodness! This small trick helps to maintain calm even in the most difficult situations,” she added.
Valuing Community and Sharing Positivity
K.Uudla also pointed out that the strength of a community begins with the positive actions of each member. “If you see someone being treated unfairly, don’t remain a bystander. My door is always open,” she assured. She also encouraged students to perform at least one small act of kindness each week. “If nothing else comes to mind, a kind word will suffice. A complainer will always find a reason to complain, but a happy person will always find a reason to rejoice,” she said, reminding everyone of the significant impact that small acts of kindness can have.
2025 – A Year of Opportunity
In conclusion, the principal urged students to be responsible, polite, and considerate. “Let’s respect one another, smile, and build a positive school environment together. If you follow these principles, 2025 will become the best year of your life so far,” she said in closing.
Wishing you all a happy and successful new year!
