When normal operations are disrupted, decisions often need to be made quickly and with incomplete information. The Business Continuity course helps participants understand how to protect people, critical activities, services and business objectives in challenging situations. The course provides a practical introduction to Business Continuity Management and connects it with risk management, organisational resilience, emergency response and crisis leadership.

A practical framework for strengthening organisational preparedness
The course provides participants with tools to assess risks, critical activities, dependencies and potential business impacts, and to develop appropriate continuity solutions. Throughout the course, participants apply these concepts in the context of a selected organisation and develop a practical Business Continuity Plan and crisis response concept.
The course draws on recognised international good practice, including ISO 22301, ISO 22313 and ISO 22316, using them as practical reference points rather than compliance checklists. Workshops, cases, scenario planning and simulation help participants practise decision-making and assess how organisations can prepare for disruption and recover more systematically.

Who is Business Continuity intended for?
The course is suitable for managers and professionals responsible for organisational operations, risks, critical processes or disruption preparedness, including professionals working in operations, risk management, security, IT, supply chain, HR or communication.
No previous Business Continuity experience is required. A general understanding of organisations, management, risk or operations is beneficial.
The course is delivered together with EBS bachelor’s students and gives working professionals an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of crisis preparedness and organisational resilience.

The course is delivered over two intensive classroom days.
Learning combines practical cases, facilitated discussions and workshops, scenario planning, simulation, peer review and presentations. Participants apply the concepts in the context of an actual or selected organization.

Why important?
Business continuity starts with understanding which activities and dependencies are critical to an organisation and which threats and vulnerabilities may affect them. Systematic risk and business impact assessment helps establish recovery priorities and prepare for situations in which normal operations are disrupted.
What will happen?
The day covers business continuity as part of organisational resilience, BC terminology and standards, risk assessment, and threat, vulnerability and dependency mapping. Participants also work with business impact analysis (BIA), critical activities and recovery priorities, scenario planning, crisis leadership and emergency response organisation.
Learning methods include short cases, facilitated discussion, a risk assessment workshop, dependency mapping, a BIA workshop, a scenario planning exercise and a warm-up crisis/continuity scenario.
Why important?
Understanding risks is only part of organisational preparedness. Organisations also need practical solutions for maintaining and recovering operations, supported by effective crisis communication, stakeholder coordination and readiness across different areas of the organisation.
What will happen?
The day covers continuity strategies and solutions, Business Continuity Plan structure, and scenario-based response and recovery options. It also addresses crisis communication and stakeholder coordination, supply chain, cyber, cloud and people aspects, as well as exercising, validation, audit and continual improvement.
Learning methods include a plan-building workshop, scenario simulation, peer review, final presentations and a facilitated debrief.
Entry requirements
- High School Education or equivalent qualification.
- Valid temporary residence permit or EU citizenship/valid living permit
Intended learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student:
1. Explains core Business Continuity Management principles, terminology and standards, and positions business continuity within organisational resilience. (Knowledge)
2. Conducts a basic risk assessment and identifies threats, vulnerabilities, critical activities, dependencies and business impacts, including cascading effects across people, technology, suppliers and stakeholders. (Application)
3. Develops proportionate continuity strategies and a basic Business Continuity Plan for an organisation or organisational unit. (Application)
4. Uses scenario planning to explore plausible disruptions and explains the role of crisis leadership, emergency response organisation, escalation, decision-making and crisis communication during disruption. (Knowledge/Application)
5. Designs basic exercising, testing, maintenance and improvement activities for continuity and crisis response arrangements. (Application)
6. Communicates continuity risks, priorities and response recommendations clearly to different stakeholders under uncertainty. (Social/Transferable)
Requirements for completing the course and assesment criteria
To complete the course successfully, participants must submit the required assessed work and achieve at least 51% of the total available score.
Assessment is based on applied coursework, simulation performance, Business Continuity Plan development and presentation. The standard EBS A–F grading scale is used.
Certificates Awarded
Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a continuing education certificate with ECTS credits. The credits may be transferred towards a degree programme.
Learning Environment
The course takes place at EBS’s modern campus in Tallinn, Lauteri 3. Students have access to ergonomic classrooms, the EBS library, and the cloud-based Canvas learning platform. The study process is supported by online tools such as Zoom, MS Teams, or Canvas Conference. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. On-site attendance is required.
